Ingredients in SPF

SPF & Knowing your Enemies!
.
I’ve gotten a few asks from the past fine lines post with more info on SUNSCREEN!
.
The FDA has flagged the above ingredients as potential health disrupters. There is a lot more research that needs to be done, but here is some of what we know (all current data found in 2019 & 2020)!
.
OXYBENXONE- THE WORST OF THE WORST. Has been found to have anti-angiogenic qualities (reduces growth of new blood cells). This chemical effects your Endocrine system which is responsible for regulating your metabolism
, growth & development, thyroid, sexual function and reproduction, among other things.
Due to cosmetics and specifically #sunscreen applications researchers have found high levels of #Oxybenzone & other #sunblock chemicals in breastmilk and alsoamniotic fluid, urine and blood. This research suggests that these chemicals effect developing fetus and newborns exposed to these substances.
Oxybenzone also is a known causer of skin allergic reactions. & in animal studies they’re finding it to reduce Sperm count, which they’re looking into if it’s a link in humans. 😮
& to top it all off, it’s BANNED in #Hawaii for lingering in our oceans, for harming/ killing corals!!! 🌊 🐚
.
While there are 13 chemicals flagged as being harmful there are only 2 being deemed as #SAFE : #zinc & #titaniumdioxide !! Evidence showing that FEW if ANY particles penetrate the skin to reach living tissues!!
.
Some of why the other ingredients are flagged:
Octinoxate: FDA study found blood levels 13 times above cutoff for systemic exposure; found in breast milk (can effect thyroid, & cause skin allergies also
.
Homosalate:
FDA study found blood levels 37 times above cutoff for systemic exposure; found in breast milk
.
Octisalate:
FDA study found blood levels 10 times above cutoff for systemic exposure; skin penetration in lab studies
.
Octocrylene:
FDA study found blood levels 14 times above cutoff for systemic exposure; found in breast milk
.
🌞Moral of the story: check your ingredients & look for mineral based sunscreens!! 🌞
.
.
Check your brands and post them below if they’re safe !
